How Do I Clean My Fireplace?

Your fireplace is a vital part of your home. It adds warmth and makes the home’s interior more comfortable and livable during the cold season. It also makes the home more ambient and stylish. In most homes, the fireplace is the living room’s focal point. Regularly cleaning the fireplace and doing it correctly is vital. This will lessen smoky odors, dust, and particulates in the home’s air while minimizing the risk of accidental fire damage. Whether it’s a wood-burning, gas, or electric fireplace – here’s how to clean a fireplace.

What’s the Best Way To Clean My Fireplace?

For a wood-burning furnace:

  • Protect the surrounding area and furniture using trash bags or old sheets, and set up a trash can with a trash bag for disposing of soot, ash, and other debris.
  • Inspect the flue for debris like bird nests or any damage.
  • Remove the andirons and grate and place them outdoors. Spray them with an all-purpose cleaner and scrub them with a medium bristle brush to eliminate any buildup of carbon deposits. Once done, rinse them thoroughly with water.
  • Clear all ash and debris from the firebox using a shovel and gently sweep the inside of the chimney and firebox with a fire brush and remove the resulting debris.
  • Clear the accumulated creosote deposits using a medium-bristle glass and an all-purpose cleaner.
  • Clean the inside of the firebox with a stiff-bristled brush and all-purpose cleaner, and rinse with clean water.
  • Clean the fireplace doors and screens with an all-purpose cleaner and a medium-bristled brush, rinse them with clean water and dry them with paper towels or dry rugs.
  • Use paper towels or dry rugs to remove all water from in and around the furnace.

For a gas fireplace:

A gas fireplace doesn’t get as dirty as a wood fireplace; thus, its cleaning process is relatively easier.

  • Start by switching off the main gas valve and confirm it’s off.
  • Remove all the debris from the fireplace by sweeping or using a vacuum.
  • Wipe down the logs using a damp rug soaked in an all-purpose cleaner. Once done, use a paper towel or dry rag to wipe the logs dry.
  • Clean the firebox door and screens using a wet medium-bristled brush to remove any buildup. Repeat the cleaning process on the firebox’s walls and base, then rinse and dry with a dry rag or paper towel.
  • Replace the logs.

For an electric fireplace:

Electric fireplaces rarely get dirty since they don’t burn any fuel. If you notice dirt and debris on your electric fireplace, switch the power to the appliance. Please wait for it to cool down and vacuum the dirt and debris.
